May’s Weed of the Month: Poison Hemlock

Home Events May’s Weed of the Month: Poison Hemlock

This plant is notoriously dangerous, making it a real threat in the garden world. Every part of it—leaves, stems, and roots—can cause harm if mishandled or ingested by you or your pets. It also often gets mistaken for Queen Anne’s Lace (wild carrot).

Here’s how you can tell them apart:

  • Smooth, hollow stems with purple blotches (hemlock)
  • No hairs on the stem (again, hemlock in disguise)
  • Wild carrot has a hairy stem and gives off a fresh carrot scent when crushed

Don’t forget your gloves when you approach this troublesome plant! Make sure to yank out the whole taproot, bag it up like a villain, and toss it in the trash. For more information, be sure to check out our flyer.
