Newton Clark Glacier Tour: Ice, Rocks and Mud 8:30am-5:00pm, Saturday September 11, 2010
The Newton Clark Glacier Tour: Ice, Rocks and Mud is part of the Hood River Watershed Group’s 2010 Educational Field Series and will feature a strenuous 7-mile round trip hike that will gain 2,220 ft in elevation. This trip is a special opportunity to see and learn about Mt. Hood’s glaciers, and actually assist USFS Geologist Tom DeRoo with photographic monitoring of recent changes to the glacier and the upper Newton Creek valley. Get a first hand view of recent slope failures, debris flows, creek blockages, and glacial recession. During the drive to the trailhead, participants will have the opportunity to view the recovery of lands impacted by the 2008 Gnarl Ridge wildfire. You must be in good shape, bring alpine hiking apparel with multiple layers, sturdy hiking boots, gloves & hat, plenty of water, and a lunch. Make sure to be prepared for all weather events. Bring a camera too! Transportation will be provided. Cost: $17.
